2008 NCHA Futurity

November 22nd through December 14th saw a gathering of the worlds greatest cutting horses, with approximately 1,800 entries in this years National Cutting Horse Association Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. Among this years competitors was newcomer, Caitlin Scheppke. The eighteen year old daughter of David and Beverly Scheppke spent her entire life horseback on her family's cattle ranch just outside of Carlsbad, New Mexico unknowingly preparing for what her mother say's was "the direction she was meant to go all along."

Her mount for the event was MK Stylish Chic, a filly by Horse of the Year, Playin Stylish. The pair marked a 207 in the first-go and narrowly missed making the semi-finals in the second-go by only a few points. Not bad considering it was only the second time she had ever shown a cutting horse. "No actually, I wasn't nervous" smiles the teen, "the circumstances for my being here are just magical. Everything from my horse, to my trainer, and all the support from my family and friends...it's hard to be nervous with all that behind you. It's all been by the grace of God, really."

Future plans include showing her mare at the NCHA Derby and Super Stakes, "She's a nice filly and needs to go on." Caitlin now lives in Blanchard, Oklahoma with her parents where they moved in 2007, and together raise cutting horses as well as running Quarter horses on their Angel Spurs Ranch. "Our first racehorses will be running sometime in March" she says, "that's going to be the next thing for us." The horse industry can expect to hear more from Caitlin and her family.
